This is a sample game that could be incorporated into an in-person component of this training. It is simply a fun way to promote engagement and create camaraderie. It should be optional and a very small prize (i.e., a drink from the staff vending machine) should be included. This type of game is beneficial for tactile learners who are prone to lose focus during e-trainings.

Programs such as Quizlet are often underutilized for adult learners. QR codes are easy to generate, and the flashcards themselves are visually clean and simple. It is possible to assign these review tasks. This particular version of flashcards allows the learner to mark information as something they "know" or are "still learning," which allows adult learners a sense of contributing to the training.  A real-time progress report is kept that shows which items were marked as "still learning," which is helpful in identifying gaps in learning and offering a starting point for figuring out why the gaps have appeared.

There are many choices out there for turning reviews into games; these are two easy-to-use options. As with the above explanation for flashcards, many instructional designers ignore these extras because they assume they are beneath adult learners.

However, how many silly games do adults play just to help them zone out? Why not capitalize on their propensity to play games, and have them cement your organization's valuable information into their working memories?

The employees and volunteers who don't want to participate won't. But, you'll be surprised by how many people will choose to participate, when it's considered optional and a small incentive is attached for the winners.

Gimkit does not generate its own QR codes (but I'm able to do this for you). This version of the game will be available until Aug. 7.

Positive organizational culture can be created in these small, overlooked ways that don't require much effort or money from anyone. When you hear staff laughing about the password they chose for the hacker game or commiserating over the question they all answered too quickly, you will be seeing relationship-building in action, and more importantly (from an instructional designer's perspective), you will see them making connections with the material you want them to learn.

They are taking charge of their learning in a way that doesn't feel taxing. If you are willing to give an option like this a shot (as an extra support tool) I will absolutely order a small, engraved trophy for you to present to the winner.

(Full subscriptions/licenses are available for Quizlet, Blooket, and Gimkit that allow data reports and game availability to be more customized. We can decide together which option makes the most sense for you.)
